Né à Lille en 1609, Anthonie Waterloo est classé « Dutch » par le Met, qui conserve 97 de ses eaux-fortes. Son nom n'a rien à voir avec la bataille, qui a lieu 125 ans après sa mort.
L'histoire
Lille est espagnole quand Waterloo y naît. Il fait sa carrière dans les Provinces-Unies, à Amsterdam puis à Utrecht, où il meurt en 1690 : pour le Met, c'est un paysagiste hollandais du Siècle d'or.
Ses eaux-fortes de sous-bois, de chemins creux et de voyageurs au repos sont arrivées en deux temps : une vingtaine achetées en 1947, puis 43 offertes par un seul collectionneur, Kenneth Grebinar, en 2005. Aucune n'est accrochée. C'est le deuxième artiste de la région par le nombre d'œuvres au Met, derrière Claude Mellan.
Le voyage, d'après le Met
Anthonie Waterloo naît à Lille (Nord) en 1609 et meurt à Utrecht (Pays-Bas) en 1690.
Le Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York conserve 90 estampes et 7 dessins de sa main dans le domaine public, entrées au musée entre 1917 et 2013. Au 28 septembre 2026, aucune n'est accrochée : elles attendent en réserve.
Le Met le classe « Dutch ». Né à Lille en 1609, dans des Pays-Bas alors espagnols et avant le rattachement de la ville à la France (traités d'Aix-la-Chapelle, 1668, et de Nimègue, 1678), il est compté par le musée parmi les artistes du Nord de l'Europe. La fiche garde l'étiquette du Met.
